Joe Crede's Exceptional Fielding Skills

Joe Crede has been magnificent at third base for the Twins in 2009. Not only is his fielding percentage the best in the AL, but he also has the least errors at the position. In addition to this, there's a stat called the UZR, which measures a player's effectiveness at a position relative to how many runs it costs his team. Crede's UZR here is best of breed.

Crede is a very valuable Minnesota Twin offensively. Relative to where he hits in the order, his numbers are solid to the point where any team would be happy to have such numbers later in the lineup. His fielding has been better though.

As far as the UZR is concerned, there's a more telling stat called the UZR 150. This essentially tells you how many runs a player has either saved or cost his team over the course of his last 150 games played at that position. Crede's UZR is unbelievable, somewhere between 25 and 30. This means he's saving the team a run once every 5 or 6 games. No one else comes close to this defensively in the AL, only Adrian Beltre, whose UZR is 10 less, between 15 and 20.

It'd seem that Joe Crede should be a shoe-in for the Gold Glove at 3B. All of his stats beat out the competition. Somehow, no one really seems to know what he's accomplished at the position.

Crede gets very little respect for what he does. He's a solid hitter and people recognize this, but virtually no one ever discusses his efficient play as a third baseman. He's simply been phenomenal this year.

There's no question that Crede should win the gold glove at third base this season, in my opinion. Looking at the stats, he dominates his competition in UZR, fielding percentage, and errors. I don't see why he wouldn't.

The Twins seemed to get snubbed for these awards every year. Save for Morneau's recent MVP award, there have been quite a few worthy fielders in recent years who haven't won the award. Castillo, Morneau, and Mauer, to name a few.

The voters for the award are far from objective, and this unfortunately shows. With a small market team like Minnesota, it's hard to get the "pull" that the bigger cities have.

These tended to be by those who did not follow the basic rules. There have been no deaths from funnel web spiders over the same time period as there is now an anti-venom available. So, as long as you follow some practical advice you should not feel threatened or in danger when here in Australia.

The Great White Shark

Poker tournament players can often make this mistake. The problem is that there are no rules about what a starting stack should be and there are no rules regarding the starting blinds or even the blind structure. A poker tournament that starts with 10,000 chips may have starting blinds that are 25/50, which would make it very deep-stacked, or it could have starting blinds of 100/200, which is relatively short-stacked.

Short-stack tournaments may attract some poker players. Tournaments like this can be an opportunity to be aggressive and take advantage of small edges. The reality is that most poker players are more comfortable in a tournament where they have a deep stack. Consideration of the starting blinds and the blind structure is very important when deciding on a poker tournament to play in.

Generally, the cheaper the tournament, the shorter the starting stacks will be. Golf fans were all stunned today when Tiger Woods was defeated by an unknown Y.E. Yang at the PGA championship. The lead was all Tiger's, and to have seen him blow it, well, many weren't expecting it to put it lightly. Yang is the first ever Asian golfer to ever win a major event, and this is the first time Tiger Woods ever lost a major on the last day after having held the lead.

Yay? I don't think the PGA, it's sponsors, or the casual golf fan are very happy. Tiger Woods in the starter, middle reliever, and closer for the PGA. Without Tiger, as we saw last year, no one cares. Now, people are getting the feeling that Tiger has lost it. He didn't win a major this year and pretty much choked away the PGA Championship after missing the cut at the British Open.

Woods is by no means past his prime. After returning from an injury that ended his 2008 campaign, Woods has bounced back with wins at five tournaments. Some of these involved some vintage Woods Sunday comebacks. Unfortunately, the majors are far more watched than the other tournaments, so the typical sports fan doesn't realize that all's not lost in Tiger's corner.

For the short-term, Yang's victory makes for an interesting story and may feed the media with some fuel for now. But the 2009 PGA season is devoid of stories. A lack of a Tiger win, and Tom Watson's falling short at the British Open both make for some major disappointments compared to what could have been.

Yang will probably make few headlines anytime soon, and the once "sure prospect" of Woods beating Jack Nicklaus' record for majors one is suddenly not such a sure thing anymore.

And for the 2009 golf season, there's not exactly much that fans can look forward to at this point. Will a Fedex Cup tournament excite them? Not exactly. There's really not much to look for.

Tiger must bounce back in 2009. He is the face of the PGA, and any story lines lacking Tiger Woods will do anything but help the sport grow.

Two, one liter bottles of water so that you stay hydrated. This is your minimum required intake per day, but since hiking is physically demanding you will drink more, especially in warmer climates. You can survive for a month without food, but only two or three days without water. You should have some sort of water treatment with you. I carry Aqua-Mira, which is a liquid purifying agent.

It's possible to spend an unexpected night in the woods. Always have some extra food, enough for an additional day if you need it. Even having a few back up whole food bars with you should do the trick. Especially if they constitute meal replacement. You will have the extra energy with you just in case.

A few more layers of clothing for comfort and safety. Temperatures can drop unexpectedly or at nightfall. If you hike through rain or fall into a creek, having only one layer of wet clothes when it starts getting colder can spell disaster. Make sure to wear synthetics as they are more insulative when wet and dry quickly.

Take a flashlight with you. You may want to purchase a headlamp so that you can be hands-free. Every once in a while, you will be out a bit later than expected. Negotiating a hiking trail in the dark is dangerous.

On rare occasion one must light a fire in the backcountry as a matter of survival. I've been on a kayak trip where someone overturned and they were soaked just as the temperature started to drop. Do not light a fire unless absolutely necessary. Bring matches and a lighter in a waterproof case and use caution to avoid wildfires.

A folding camp knife will serve many a purpose. Be sure that the one you choose has a blade that locks when open. I've seen knives that don't lock take off finger tips.

Ultraviolet protection is really important. The suns rays can be damaging to eyes and skin, so bring a good pair of sunglasses, a small tube of sunblock and perhaps a wide brimmed hat.

Bring On a Super Fight!

There seem to be a few great MMA fights each year, highly anticipated. Generally speaking, there's still a favorite in each fight, as fans know who to expect to win. Once in a blue moon, the type of epic fight comes along that has a feel of the "Frazier/Ali" hype to it.

Looking at the current state of the UFC, middleweight and welterweight champs Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre have both defeated all of their recent competition with relative ease, leaving many fans to ponder how they can do something interesting from here.

Once "GSP" and Thiago Alves' fight came to a close during UFC 100 it was obvious "GSP" had manhandled Alves and was going to walk away with yet another dominant victory. He did. St-Pierre's next opponent will be the winner of Mike Swick and Martin Kampman at UFC 103. Two guys who've fought their way to the top of the division and one will get a shot at Georges St-Pierre. Although both men are very capable MMA fighters it's really hard to say either of them have a chance at defeating the champ. St-Pierre is simply in another class of fighter. When the Swick v St-Pierre or Kampman v St-Pierre fight comes and goes we'll probably all be left with a burning question, whose next?

After Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin's "fight" at UFC 101 this past Saturday some questions were raised. What was Anderson Silva going to do next? He had just defeated former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin in an embarrassing fashion. Knocking down Forrest twice before offering to help him up, then seconds later knocking Forrest down for a third and final time. Before the fight Forrest said something like "you may beat me, but nobody will ever break me." Really Forrest? He ran out of the octagon and then the building. Avoiding the post fight press conference and has still not released an official statement. I think broken is a nice word, words like crippled, shattered and disintegrated come to mind.

Next on Silva's list is Dan Henderson, who earned a shot for the title against Silva after defeating Britain's best, Michael Bisbing. Still, no one sees this as a fight to take too seriously and fans and experts alike predict an easy win for Silva. What's left for Silva to prove now?

Despite the fact that Silva can roll with the best in his class, he still isn't willing to move up to the light heavyweight division and accept a fight with its champ, Lyoto Machida. Silva and Machida are great friends and he'd prefer not to fight such a close friend.

At this point, it looks like both St. Pierre and Anderson are at their peaks, with no one posing any kind of threat to the two. Interest may wane due to the lack of competitiveness in their fights, so why not put the two against each other?

As for who would come out on top, well, that's the beauty of a fight like this. No one really knows. It's been a while since we've seen a super fight, and I think the UFC is due.

An Overlooked Pitching Prospect

It seems like everyone has always had criticism for Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox starting pitcher. Whether they point out his young age, his height, the unworthy hype he receives, or anything else, people are always ready to point out his flaws.

Lately, Buccholz has been more than solid. Just this past week, he started in Toronto against the always intimidating Roy Halladay. This was a very difficult match-up for Buchholz, and anyone following the game would have expected Halladay to out-pitch him.

But Buchholz continued to be unfazed by all of it and put up his third-straight solid start, going six innings and allowing just one run on six hits on 94 pitches for the win while Halladay looked like the inexperienced one (five innings, eight hits, four earned runs, 103 pitches). He's learning on the job and despite going up against the other team's best, Buchholz continues to send a message to anyone that will listen that he has earned his spot.

This was a great start against the Blue Jays, and adds to the list of recent impressive starts we've seen the young pitcher put together. His last three match-ups have all been extremely difficult ones, as we've seen him pitted up against CC Sabathia, Justin Verlander, and Roy Halladay in consecutive starts. His starts against the Yankees and Tigers were on the same level as the start against Halladay, as he allowed just one and two earned runs respectively in these.

While there have been struggles - namely a horrendous outing against Baltimore before this stretch of quality starts - Buchholz (2-3, 3.99 ERA) has been pitching well enough to keep his spot until Tim Wakefield and/or Daisuke Matsusaka returns and deserves credit for filling a hole left by John Smoltz's abysmal run in a Red Sox uniform.

Incidentally, Buchholz was the subject of many rumors leading up to the trade deadline. It's very well possible that these rumors had a real impact on his performance, which is when his struggles essentially took place.

Don't let the haters fool you: Buchholz is for real and this three-start trial by fire against three of the AL's best shouldn't be overlooked. Those that say he isn't pitching well should explain what their criteria is, because from everything I'm seeing, this is exactly what you should expect from a top prospect with 25 career starts pitching for one of the highest-profile and most covered teams in sports.

The Red Sox are sorely in need of a reliable starting pitcher. With Matsuzaka and Wakefield sidelined, and Smoltz back down in the minors, there couldn't be a better time for Buchholz to establish himself as a steady hand in Boston's rotation.

Tiger Woods Blows it for Himself and the PGA

In a very interesting and atypical twist today, Tiger Woods blew a lead entering the final round of the PGA Championships, losing to Y.E. Yang, a relatively unknown golfer. Woods had simply never lost a major after leading or being tied for the lead, and the world was shocked after witnessing today's events.

Yay? I don't think the PGA, it's sponsors, or the casual golf fan are very happy. Tiger Woods in the starter, middle reliever, and closer for the PGA. Without Tiger, as we saw last year, no one cares. Now, people are getting the feeling that Tiger has lost it. He didn't win a major this year and pretty much choked away the PGA Championship after missing the cut at the British Open.

Woods hasn't regressed as much as people like to think. He's still won a very impressive five tourneys in 2009, and has staged some remarkable comebacks this year. Only the more serious fans realize this, but the media will be all about Tiger's lack of a major in 2009.

Yang winning is good, at the moment. But looking back 20 or 30 years from now, wouldn't you rather tell your kids or grandchildren about how the greatest golfer of all time beat some other guy in a 12-hole playoff after holing out from the fairway on 18. Wouldn't you rather have told your grandkids about how Tom Watson, the old geezer like you, won the British Open instead of pushing an 8 foot putt way to the right and self-destructing in a 4 hole playoff?

Yet, this pushes it to another level. You're talking about the greatest golfer on Earth, losing to some no-name from South Korea who probably won't win another major. If Tiger had won, it would've given hope to next year, a hope maybe he finally does what he was destined to do, win all the major in the same year and pass Jack Nicklaus for the most Major wins ever.

And for the 2009 golf season, there's not exactly much that fans can look forward to at this point. Will a Fedex Cup tournament excite them? Not exactly. There's really not much to look for.

We need the Tiger, the best golfer, to be well, the best golfer. He needs to hold leads on Sunday. He needs people to be scared on the last few holes with Tiger on the prowl. We need Tiger Woods to dominate everybody and ask questions later. If he's labeled the best, he needs to start performing in the biggest and best events.

Here's to hoping that 2010 brings us a Tiger resurgence, and most notably, a major or two. The sport really needs it.

The Different types of Unions for Filmmaking

As you begin your filmmaking career, unions will not really be much of a concern. For the most part, you will do all your hiring of actors and crew members from non-union members. However, after you have successfully completed a couple of films and made some money, you will most certainly need to start hiring union member actors and crew.

There are many unions affiliated with this industry including local ones. Here is a short list of a few you may encounter when embarking on your filmmaking career.

ACTRA

The Alliance of Canadian Cinema and Radio Artists is obviously a Canadian union. It's the sister union of the US based AFTRA. This is an actor's alliance, including performers in film, television and radio. As well as voice over artists, puppeteers, stunt performers, dancers and background performers.

This union was founded in 1943 to promote as well as protect its members. They negotiate wages for the actor's as well as benefits such as medical and dental and even retirement benefits with one particular branch.

ACTRA has their own awards ceremony to honor their performers much like the Academy Awards.

The requirements for membership include a onetime initiation fee of $75, plus a $75 annual fee. In addition, the actor must have had at least one speaking role in a film or television production, however this rule does not apply to background performers as they o not typically have a speaking role.

AFTRA

American Federation of Television and Radio Artists is based in the United States and like ACTRA, protects their members by negotiating wages, working conditions and benefits.

AFTRA represents Actors, Journalists and anyone working in the media and entertainment industries.

Founded in 1930, this makes AFTRA one of the oldest unions in the United States. In 1937, it began including radio artists and has now evolved to include negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild or SAG.

CFTPA

This is the Canadian Film and Television Production Association. It represents Television and Multimedia companies. They manage labor agreements, taxation, trade, copyright, broadcasting and film.

This union also trains young people about the industry and how to compete in it. This union is mostly for independent producers and production companies.

Directors Guild of America/Canada

This union represents Directors in both Canada and the United States. Assistant Directors, Unit Production Managers, Associate Directors, Stage Managers and Production Associates are also included.

Like with the others, they negotiate wages and working conditions of Directors in Film, Television, Stage, Media, Broadcasting and any form of production.

This union has evolved into a worldwide union from its humble beginnings in 1934 with only 100 members.

SAG

Screen Actors Guild union is probably one of the most well known of the unions. Founded in 1933, this union has stood up for actors back when the studios held control over contracts of their actors. Helping actors break free of long term contracts that didn't benefit them and making sure they were treated well.

The main reason for founding this union was that at the time, studios and producers held actors contracts and forced them to work excessively long hours. In addition, many of these contracts controlled the actors lives, including their personal lives.

This union has stood the test of time and is well noted for its best to protect its members. It was founded by a group of 21 actors who felt their rights were being violated.

In order to become a member, you must apply and have had at least one speaking role.

WGA/WGC

Known as the Writers Guild of America and the Writers Guild Of Canada, these unions represent writers in the film and television industry, media, CD-ROM, movies and news broadcasts.

The unions purpose is to negotiate contracts for its members and then enforce them with producers and directors. They also ensure their members receive medical and dental benefits in their contracts as well as residual pay for all screenwriters.

Members are offered training programs and resources and novel authors and screenwriters can register their work with the union in order to protect it from theft and plagiarism.

Many unions are also available for those in theatre, projectionists, camera operators and post production. The best way to ensure you are choosing the right union for you is to do some thorough research.
