Dustin Nippert Looks Good for Rangers

By Colin Ransby

Dustin Nippert laid out his case for maintaining the number five role in the Texas Rangers' starting rotation of pitchers in the Rangers' 5.0-two victory versus Toronto in the first half of Tuesday's doubleheader. Next up, Brandon McCarthy, returning for his first since departing the active roster in early June for the inactive list.

Nippert showed far superior control than in his most recent start last week against the Yankees. In the Bronx, he allowed eleven base runners (4 hits, seven bases on balls) and was only responsible for 11 outs. On Tuesday afternoon, he got out of trouble to obtain his fifth win of the year and third as a starting pitcher. Nippert was responsible for five hits, walked merely one. He lowered his ERA as a starting pitcher to 4.43 and on the whole to 3.91. It was Nippert's third respectable outing in his most recent 5 outings.

Nippert insisted there genuinely was not much discrepancy between how he threw last week and on Tuesday: "Just able to throw strikes. In Yankee Stadium, I think I threw one slider for a strike. The bigger predicament I put myself in, I tried more to get out of it. I was clearly going the wrong way. I continued walking guys, trying to create that just right pitch.

"Today, I was able to pitch it early in the count, late in the count. Keep them off my fastball."

Said manager Ron Washington: "I don't suppose he was pitching too hard. He was balancing with his change-up and his moving stuff. Increased the speed of his fastball."

Washington and Nippert both confirmed Nippert was not throwing to protect his role in the pitching rotation. And Nippert insisted he'll happily start or come out of the bullpen. As the Rangers are in post-season pursuit, each teammate's role increases in importance.

"I only wish to lend a hand to this team," he insisted. "It's great for us that we possess more arms currently. Whomever's effective you might go with.
