Understanding Leaks in Poker

By Corie Aquino

All of us are vulnerable to make mistakes. We usually make mistakes if we don't follow the instructions whenever we do something. In order to avoid making mistakes, one should always learn from the errors they made in their pasts.

Some people thought they could get away from their mistakes and decline to learn from their errors. They still go to work even though they are hung-over; still drink without thinking of the consequences; hang up with friends who can lead them into trouble - then they make promises not to do it again but ended up doing the same things over and over again.

Usually the same kind of people can be seen playing poker - where errors are small and overlooked by many. Errors that are not corrected in poker are known as leaks or holes in the game and can be very damaging for your game play. If you often make the same mistakes then it's not called leaks anymore but big holes in your game. This article is all about leaks, and if you have big holes in your game, you need to check out your basic poker strategy book once again.

There are three different kinds of leaks: * Frequent small mistakes * Infrequent small mistakes * Non-strategic mistakes

Recurring mistakes came up when decisions are to be made regularly. Small mistakes that are committed frequently can include something from playing with a lot of suited hands before flop to continuing bets even there is no chance of winning.

If a small mistake is committed infrequently then it is harder to see. It would be more like playing one or two particular hands instead of playing many suited hands or missing value bets on the river instead of betting on cards with no chance of winning.

Leaks that are non-strategic include parts of the game that happens before the cards are dealt. This may comprise of being drunk or tired before the game started. Quickly seating on a seat that is available without checking if that's a strategic place or not is also a mistake; and not checking out about your playmates is also a costly error.

Errors can be corrected and the easiest errors you can correct are the non-strategic ones. Always see to it that you are ready to play or not. If you think that you're not in the mood to play poker then resist playing the game. If you are too tired to check the best available table or seat then stop at that moment and don't play.

One excellent step you can take is to give yourself some time to look for a suitable and strategic table to select. Then you have to check out if your opponents on the table are included at the PokerTracker DB. Also take note that you are fit enough mentally and physically to beat the game; so it means no drinking before the game and make sure you're not tired.

Strategic mistakes are difficult to point out and much harder to correct; particularly if they occur only once in a while. A better poker player will know a frequent leak while analyzing their own play.

As for infrequent mistakes, this kind will take another person to point it out for you in order to be notice. You can discussed this with your friends or participate in some poker discussion places in order to know your weakness. And don't forget to snap out quickly on the person who's criticizing your game play; because they are always the one who can point out this type of error for you.

Errors are not a luxury you should always make. But if you know how to cope out from those mistakes then you can save a lot in the process. In order for you to erase the leaks in your game, you need to know that they exist first. However, some people are stubborn enough not to acknowledge their own mistakes until it's too late.
